The Muktinath and Damodar Kunda Jeep and Horse Ride Tour by Yolo Hike is a thrilling and spiritually enriching journey into the heart of Upper Mustang, blending off-road adventure with high-altitude pilgrimage. This 7-day tour starts from Pokhara and follows a rugged, scenic route to Jomsom, Muktinath, Yara, and Thanti, ultimately reaching the sacred Damodar Kunda—a revered site for Hindu and Buddhist devotees. The journey combines 4WD jeep rides through remote mountain terrain and horseback riding to access Damodar Kunda, located at an elevation of 4,890 meters. Traversing one of Nepal's most arid and isolated regions, travelers experience the stark beauty of the trans-Himalayan landscape, ancient Tibetan-influenced villages, centuries-old monasteries, and the spiritual essence of Mustang. Designed for both adventurers and pilgrims, this tour offers a rare opportunity to reach one of Nepal’s holiest yet most inaccessible destinations in relative comfort, without the need for extensive trekking.

About Muktinath

Muktinath Temple, located at 3,800 meters in the Mustang district, is one of Nepal’s most sacred pilgrimage destinations for both Hindus and Buddhists. Known as the “Place of Liberation,” it is believed that a visit to Muktinath and a ritual bath in its 108 holy water spouts can wash away lifetimes of sins. The temple complex includes a Vishnu shrine (Muktinath), a Buddhist monastery, and an eternal flame known as Jwala Mai, which has been burning naturally for centuries. Surrounded by stark mountain deserts and with panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, Muktinath offers both spiritual solace and awe-inspiring natural beauty. For many, this site serves as a key highlight of the Damodar Kunda journey, offering blessings and acclimatization before venturing further into the higher altitudes of Upper Mustang.

About Damodar Kunda

Damodar Kunda, situated in the Upper Mustang region near the Tibetan border, is a cluster of sacred alpine lakes at 4,890 meters above sea level. These glacial-fed waters are of immense religious significance to Hindus, who believe that bathing in the lake washes away sins and paves the path to liberation (moksha). It is also deeply venerated in Buddhist tradition, associated with ancient spiritual practices and revered by monks and local communities. The lake is the source of the Kali Gandaki River, known for the sacred Shaligram stones found along its banks. The stark, otherworldly beauty of the Damodar Himal range surrounding the lake, coupled with its isolation and spiritual energy, makes it a profound destination for seekers of both natural and divine wonder. Given its extreme altitude and remote location, it’s a place few have the chance to witness—making it one of Nepal’s most exclusive pilgrimage sites.

From Pokhara, take on a scenic and adventurous drive northward towards Jomsom in the Mustang district, covering approximately 160 km in total. The drive takes around 8–10 hours via the Beni-Jomsom road, which passes through Beni, Tatopani, Ghasa, and Marpha.

The route is initially paved but gradually transitions into rugged mountain tracks carved into the Kali Gandaki Gorge—the world's deepest gorge—offering stunning views of Dhaulagiri (8,167m) and Annapurna (8,091m). Upon reaching Jomsom (2,720m), continue driving for an additional 23 km (1.5–2 hours) to reach the sacred Muktinath Temple at 3,800m. Muktinath is a revered pilgrimage site for Hindus and Buddhists alike, nestled beneath the Thorong La Pass. The high altitude may start to be felt here, so acclimatization is important. Overnight stay in Muktinath or nearby Ranipauwa.

After morning rituals or exploration in Muktinath, drive eastwards towards Yara, a remote village in Upper Mustang. The journey covers approximately 45 km and takes around 5–6 hours depending on road conditions. The route descends to Chhusang (2,980m), then follows the trail through Ghiling and Dhakmar, with views of eroded cliffs, wind-carved canyons, and arid landscapes reminiscent of Tibetan plateaus.

You'll climb gradually toward Yara village (3,650m), known for its traditional mud houses, ancient monasteries, and unique rock formations. This drive is more off-road oriented, demanding a robust 4WD vehicle due to rough terrain and narrow mountain passes. Overnight stay in Yara.

On this day, drive from Yara to Thanti, the last motorable point before Damodar Kunda, covering a distance of about 25–30 km, taking 5–6 hours. The elevation gain is significant, with Thanti situated at approximately 4,500m. The route is extremely rugged, traversing through arid highlands, shallow river crossings, and barren landscapes with minimal vegetation.

You'll be driving along remote trails that offer views of Nilgiri and the Mustang Himal ranges. Thanti serves as a resting place for travelers heading to Damodar Kunda. Due to the altitude, it is vital to acclimatize and stay hydrated. Overnight stay in Thanti, with preparation for the horseback journey ahead.

Begin the ascent towards the sacred Damodar Kunda via horseback, as the terrain from Thanti becomes inaccessible for jeeps. The distance is around 15–18 km one way, and it takes 6–8 hours of riding (round trip), depending on weather and trail conditions. The trail is steep, rocky, and exposed to the elements, with the oxygen level dropping noticeably at this altitude.

Damodar Kunda sits at 4,890m, in the remote Upper Mustang region near the Tibetan border. These glacial-fed alpine lakes are revered by Hindus as the source of the Kali Gandaki River and are associated with Lord Vishnu. The turquoise waters set against a barren, snow-capped backdrop make this a spiritually and visually rewarding destination. After offering prayers or taking a holy dip (for those able to brave the cold), return to Thanti on horseback. Overnight stay in Thanti.

This day provides some flexibility based on the previous day’s journey. If you returned to Thanti on Day 4, use Day 5 to rest and explore the surrounding high-altitude terrain or visit local monasteries. However, if you camped near Damodar Kunda, begin your descent back to Thanti on horseback, retracing your route. The return distance is 15–18 km, taking about 3–4 hours downhill. The journey offers panoramic views of the Mustang landscape, including distant peaks like Saribung (6,346m). Overnight in Thanti.

Begin the long return drive from Thanti back to Jomsom, descending from 4,500m to 2,720m, covering around 80–90 kmin 8–9 hours. The terrain is once again rough and off-road, passing through Yara, Ghami, and Chhusang before reconnecting with the main Kali Gandaki valley. The drop in altitude is significant, which generally helps with acclimatization and energy levels. Upon reaching Jomsom, you’ll be back in a more developed region with access to better accommodation, food, and connectivity. Jomsom’s cold desert climate is moderated by its location in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Overnight stay in Jomsom.

Today we will travel 160 km drive back to Pokhara, taking approximately 8–10 hours. The return route along the Kali Gandaki River takes you through Marpha (famed for its apples and brandy), Tatopani (known for hot springs), and back to Beni before reaching Pokhara. The drive is a mix of gravel and paved roads, gradually descending to lush valleys, forests, and rice terraces. After a week in the high Himalayas, Pokhara’s mild climate, tranquil lakes, and comfortable accommodations offer a relaxing end to your adventurous pilgrimage. Overnight stay in Pokhara or onward travel as per your plans.
