Exploring the Lower Mustang is a unique blend of Culture and Scenic Landscapes. Trekking near Jomsom offers a captivating journey through the stark, rugged landscapes of Lower Mustang, punctuated by rich Tibetan Buddhist cultural sites. This trek is an ideal choice for those seeking a less strenuous adventure at relatively low altitudes, with the added exploration of charming Thakali villages of Tukuche, Kobang, and Marpha.
The manageable heights of this trek make it perfect for hikers who have limited time or prefer to avoid the challenges of more demanding treks. The option to fly from Pokhara to Jomsom further reduces travel time, allowing you to focus on enjoying the trek itself rather than on the logistical challenges but increases the cost slightly, which is not included in the trek.
The Kali Gandaki River beautifully frames the Lower Mustang trek to the west and the Marshyangdi River to the east. Notably, the Kali Gandaki is home to the world’s deepest gorge and the revered Shaligram Shilas, making it a significant highlight of the journey. This route also connects with the famous Annapurna Circuit Trek as you pass through Thorong La, venturing into off-the-beaten-path areas that showcase the raw beauty of the region.
The journey begins with a hike to Kagbeni, followed by a visit to Muktinath, one of the most revered pilgrimage sites for both Hindus and Buddhists. Along the way, you’ll encounter ascetic sadhus, spiritual wanderers carrying little more than a blanket and a trident, who come to this sacred place seeking enlightenment. Afterward, a scenic flight from Pokhara takes you over the world’s deepest valley, the Kali Gandaki, to Jomsom, from where you continue trekking through the villages of Lupra and Thini, eventually reaching Kalopani.
Our expertly crafted itinerary leads you through remote, picturesque villages steeped in pre-Buddhist Bon traditions, Tibetan influences, and Thakali customs. You’ll have the chance to explore cultural sites often overlooked by the typical trekking routes. We have considered the addition of the serene Dhumba Lake visualizing the awe-inspiring Dhaulagiri Ice Fall for an even more enriching experience. On our Lower Mustang itinerary, you won't miss the opportunity to visit Chimang Village, where you can explore the local apple farms, and take a short detour to the tranquil Titi Lake, known for its serene beauty and peaceful surroundings.
Recent road developments to the Tibetan border at Korala in Upper Mustang have impacted the traditional trekking paths. However, this evolution has also opened up new possibilities. Our trail has been thoughtfully designed to include remote, scenic villages that offer an authentic experience of Lower Mustang’s rich cultural tapestry. Here, you can immerse yourself in the ancient practices of pre-buddhist religions, Animism, and Tibetan and Thakali customs, ensuring this trek remains a vibrant and life-affirming adventure.
